A Rich Menu is a menu that stays permanently visible on the LINE chat screen. You can use it to guide friends to a website or a booking page, or to start a Workflow with a tap, bringing your most-used pathways together in one place.
What Is a Rich Menu?
A Rich Menu is a menu that is always displayed at the bottom of the LINE chat screen. You can place several buttons over a background image, and when a friend taps one, an action runs, such as opening a URL, sending text, or switching to another Rich Menu.
Because it sits in a spot that friends always see, gathering your most-used pathways here makes it highly effective as a starting point for guiding people to your website or for inquiries.
Let the Agent Handle It
You can leave everything from planning to setting up a Rich Menu to the Marketing Agent. When you share a goal like "I want to create a Rich Menu that helps new friends find their way," the agent suggests a layout and button arrangement and prepares the setup for you.
Your role is to decide the goal and, after reviewing the agent's proposal, choose whether to "Approve" or "Cancel". You can also review what is proposed and adjust just the parts you want to change yourself.
If you prefer to build everything from scratch, you can set it up manually from the Rich Menu creation screen. For detailed steps, see the article on how to create and apply a Rich Menu.
What You Can Do with a Rich Menu
A Rich Menu lets you guide friends naturally toward their next action right from the chat screen.
- Keep link buttons to a website, booking page, and more permanently visible on the chat screen
- Send text and start a Workflow with a button tap
- Prepare multiple Rich Menus and switch between them with a button tap
- Show different Rich Menus depending on the Segment, time period, or day of the week
- Set priorities to control the order in which multiple Rich Menus are applied
Components of a Rich Menu
A single Rich Menu is made up of the following elements.
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | A name for managing the Rich Menu |
| Rich Menu image | The image displayed as the background of the entire menu. It supports JPEG/PNG format, up to 1MB |
| Layout | The button arrangement pattern. You can choose between a large size (2500px wide × 1686px tall) and a small size (2500px wide × 843px tall) |
| Action area | A tappable region (button). You set an action on each area |
| Menu bar text | The label shown when the menu is collapsed |
| Display setting | A setting for whether the menu opens in an expanded state by default |
Layout Types
A Rich Menu comes in two families, a large size (2500px wide × 1686px tall) and a small size (2500px wide × 843px tall), each offering several layouts. You can choose an arrangement pattern that fits your purpose, such as a grid split, a left-right or top-bottom split, or a single full-area layout.
When you select a layout on the creation screen, you can check the area arrangement in the preview. Prepare your background image to match the size of the layout you choose (large size or small size). Images that do not match the size cannot be uploaded.
Action Types
For each action area (button), you set what happens when it is tapped. The actions you can set are as follows.
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Text | When tapped, the text you set is sent in the chat. You can use it as a way to start a Workflow |
| Link | When tapped, it opens the specified URL in the browser |
| Switch menu | When tapped, it switches to another Rich Menu. You can also use it as a way to start a Workflow |
| Postback | Treats the tap as an internal trigger and starts a Workflow |
For each action, you can also set the Workflow it starts. By combining actions with Workflows, you can chain processes such as auto messages and tagging, starting from a button tap.
Targeting
A Rich Menu can switch who it is shown to and when, based on conditions. This lets you deliver the most relevant menu to each friend Segment.
| Condition | Description |
|---|---|
| Segment | Displays only to friends who belong to the specified Segment. You can specify multiple Segments and can also exclude specific Segments |
| Period | Set a start date and an end date so it is shown only during that period |
| Day of week | Displays only on the specified days of the week |
| Priority | The smaller the number, the higher the priority. When the conditions of multiple Rich Menus overlap, the menu with the higher priority is shown |
The "Segment" here refers to a condition for narrowing down friends. It is a separate concept from the tag you put on friends, so please take care not to confuse them. What you can specify as the target for switching is a Segment.
Note that a Segment containing a very large number of friends may not be available as a target for switching.
The Rich Menu List Screen
On the Rich Menu list screen, you can manage all of your created Rich Menus in one place. The list shows the following items.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Priority | The menu's priority. The smaller the number, the higher the priority |
| Name | The name of the Rich Menu. Clicking it opens the edit screen |
| Image | A preview of the background image |
| Target Segment | The Segment that is set |
| Period | The display period |
| Status | "Active" or "Stopped" |
| Last updated | The date and time it was last updated |
You can create Folders to organize your Rich Menus. You can also select multiple Rich Menus to duplicate, delete, or move them to a Folder all at once.
To apply your settings to LINE, choose "Update Rich Menus" from the "More actions" menu. When you choose "Apply" in the confirmation dialog, all Rich Menus are applied to LINE based on the priority settings. It may take some time for the changes to take effect.
Managing Status
A Rich Menu has two states, "Active" and "Stopped", which indicate whether it is applied to LINE.
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Active | Applied to LINE and shown to friends who match the conditions |
| Stopped | Not applied to LINE and not shown to friends |
Common Usage Patterns
A Rich Menu can be used in many ways to fit your purpose. Here are some representative patterns.
- Guiding to a website: Place buttons like "Product list," "Book now," and "Access" to guide friends to your website
- Menus by member rank: Split Segments between top-tier members and general members, and show each a different Rich Menu
- Campaign-limited menus: Set a period condition to show a special Rich Menu only during a campaign
- Multi-level menus: Use a "See more" button to switch to another Rich Menu and deliver more information
Things to Note Before Using
To use a Rich Menu, the target LINE Official Account must be connected to Lumo. In addition, depending on your plan, a Rich Menu may not be available. If it is not available, please consider upgrading your plan.
